Frank Howard Field at Memorial Stadium, known to opponents as Death Valley, is home to the Clemson Tigers football team. Memorial Stadium opened in 1942 and currently has capacity to seat 80,301. The largest crowd to see a Clemson football game at Memorial Stadium was in 1999, when over 86,000 fans saw the Tigers play Florida State. The term Death Valley comes from the fact that Memorial Stadium is situated in a valley. It is a tradition for Clemson ROTC to protect Howard's Rock for twenty four hours before the Clemson-South Carolina game when held in Death Valley. The cadets keep a steady drum cadence around the rock prior to the game and can be heard across the Clemson campus.
